Work: V.A. Marchenko is an outstanding Ukrainian mathematician, his works in such fields as mathematical physics, mathematical analysis, theory of differential equations made him a prominent figure for specialists all over the world. He is author of more than 100 science works, including 7 monographs. In 1951 he defended a scientific doctoral thesis. He became professor in Kharkov State University in 1952. In 1961 V.A. Marchenko joined the newly created Institute for Low Temperature, Physics & Engineering, where he took an active part in the organization of Mathematical Division, in which a wide range of fundamental and applied researches was carried out. He continued at the same time his educational activity at the university, which had begun in 1945. Many generations of students can proudly say that they attended profound lectures of ``the chief'' Marchenko. V.A.Marchenko supervised more than twenty doctors and candidates of science at the university and at the institute. His reports in numerous scientific forums, in many countries of the world have, have always greatly inspired the interest of participants and helped to maintain the prestige of Ukrainian science. V.A.Marchenko has always taken an active position in social and public problems. He has intensely worked on school education problems. He has served as President of Kharkov Mathematical Society, as editor and member of the editorial board of many home and foreign mathematical journals, and was many times elected as representative of colleagues and collaborators of various rank. At the present time he is still taking part in the project of establishing Kharkov as an intellectual center. July 7, 2002 |
